I'm still monitoring NX prices and hope to pick one up before next summer, but in the meantime, I recently had the chance to sample one of those driving experiences you can buy to treat yourself or a friend (Click here to get one for yourself)

It involved hooning around in a Caterham and learning how to drift. So it was a bit different to the Nissan or my previous driving experience, but proved to be a lot of fun. Basically you stayed in first gear and under 40mph - sounds tame until you're in a car going sideways!

It turned out to be amazing fun. The Caterhams accelerated incredibly quickly, and proved easy to drift by combining the power with more 'durable' tyres then you'd want on a track.

Everyone on the course, from the complete novice to more experienced drivers, had a great time and with runs of two quick laps it meant everyone got plenty of time in the car.

The only problem is that it was a cheap way to sample drifting, but now I'm trying to work out how much an empty car park would cost me!Dan Thorntonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07967171952551962859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4974029847789922330.post-87786731329781546942011-07-07T07:39:00.000-07:002011-07-07T07:44:28.107-07:00An actual Nissan 100NX for sale...To make up for the last post, here's an actual Nissan 100 NX for sale on eBay which could be of interest.

A '93 K reg Nissan 100 NX in black, tasteful alloys but no other modifications listed or obvious, and just £420 with zero bids so far...

I have to admit, I'm a bit tempted to break out the credit card...

Dan Thorntonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07967171952551962859noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4974029847789922330.post-1268147178598862422011-07-07T07:34:00.000-07:002011-07-07T07:37:23.305-07:00A 2005 Nissan 100NX?If you're really expecting a 2005 Nissan 100NX has mysteriously left the factory after being hidden in a corner for almost a decade, then I apologies for getting your hopes up...

But I couldn't help spotting this eBay listing, which appears to have a Nissan NX disguised to all intents and purposes as a Nissan Almera....Dan Thorntonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07967171952551962859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4974029847789922330.post-84161448398617821102010-10-21T08:45:00.000-07:002010-10-21T08:55:11.300-07:00Looking at some Nissan NX's on ebay...Given that I've had a non-running Nissan NX 100 on my drive for over a year, it may seem slightly silly, but I can't stop myself thinking about picking one up with is fully MOT'd and taxed to use as a daily car again..
So a quick look at eBay looks promising:
I'm discounting anything from a garage or that's over £1,500 - an instant way to lose money considering the resale value of the under-rated and under-appreciated NX. Here's a handy price guide for the Nissan NX.
But I have spotted a couple of reasonable options on eBay at the moment:

1. A 1993 Black 1.6 with 5 previous owners starting at £650. It's a 5-speed manual with roof covers and sun blocks (which people normally lose early on).

2. A 1992 Red 1.6 5-speed at £595. Surprisingly this is actual via a garage, but the explanation is that it's a part-ex to clear.

Now all I can do is hope one of you takes a look and busy them before my willpower gives way...Dan Thorntonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07967171952551962859noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4974029847789922330.post-66053277030050739242010-08-23T05:30:00.000-07:002010-08-23T05:35:19.744-07:00Washing the NX and remembering why I like it...So early last year I decided that rather than scrapping the NX or breaking it, I'd try and rebuild it. Hopes were raised, budgets were planned, and then...

Nothing.

Basically work, family, websites and a lack of spare cash all transpired to mean the poor Nissan has sat on my drive, not turning a wheel except to be pushed forwards or backwards if we need the room (At least the brakes don't seem to have seized yet!).

Every day I walk past guiltily - and it's got even worse now that the family car has been hit not once, but twice this year, and has assorted bodywork damage which could also do with some repairs.

At least I've finally had the time to start cleaning up both cars and working out exactly what needs doing, and what the best plan of attack will be - and I've given up some other hobbies in order to actually fund some progress. The biggest problems are that winter is coming, I don't have a garage, and I'm not entirely sure the NX is exactly watertight...

First job then, is to buy/find/steal/borrow a decent car cover from somewhere - anyone got any recommendations?Dan Thorntonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07967171952551962859noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4974029847789922330.post-48953637964213574512009-09-21T13:50:00.001-07:002010-08-23T08:07:54.044-07:00Not often you see a Nissan NX 100 go rallyingI'd heard of people racing Nissan NX 100s in various Tarmac events, but I hadn't seen any rally examples until now.

The pictures are copyright protected on Flickr so I can't embed them, but there's a rally NX here, here and here. It looks like it's driven by João Luis Palma & Luis José Maldonado, and Joao seems to be a fairly frequent racer. Sadly I can't translate any of the reports...

Spookily enough I'd just been on a short holiday, and took the chance to do some rally driving in a Peugeot 205 - maybe someone is trying to tell me something!

Anyone else got any unusual NX motorsport pictures? Spotted one going ice-racing?Dan Thorntonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07967171952551962859noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4974029847789922330.post-52684157146836563832009-07-12T05:55:00.001-07:002010-06-27T15:15:52.294-07:00The NX decisionWell, after a bit of thought, and a lot of sitting around I've made a decision about the future of my NX.

We're going to rebuild it.

It's going to take a lot of work and effort, and a lot of time (which is something which is in short supply for me), but the cost to get it into a state where I could sell it wouldn't be returned - and I'm strangely unable to see it go to the scrapyard.

So for once I'm actually going to start planning it carefully.

First stage is to come up with a plan for the finished article - I'm giving myself 12 months to get it into a decent state again, which seems reasonable considering all work will be happening on my driveway unless I can find a good friend with a garage I can use or someone with a workshop sitting idle.

The basic plan is something fairly stripped and light, fairly subtle, and retaining a couple of creature comforts to have something that's usable but a bit quicker and more unusual than standard - I'm not going to go over the top with body mods, and I don't have the money to do something really bizarre.

I'm also looking at how to rebuild the engine for more power, or possible engine swaps. There must be something which is a better alternative in terms of cost than the popular Pulsar GTi swap.

Inspiration is coming from a range of places, including cars like the Integra Type R - something that discerning pople know is quicker than standard, but not something that shouts about how quick it is.Dan Thorntonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07967171952551962859noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4974029847789922330.post-28927850874250034242009-04-13T06:59:00.001-07:002010-06-27T15:15:52.332-07:00Considering the fate of my NX...Well, the MOT didn't deliver great news - I expected that it might be a fail, but it turns out the NX needs a fair bit of welding, as well as a catalytic converter replaced.

Overall, it's not an extortionate cost - the local garage estimated an MOT pass for about £300 of work.

But it looks like I'll be commuting more in the future, so won't need a car for getting to work - and can I really justify a second car for the occasional weekend trip? Plus, after getting an MOT pass, there's a few jobs which will need fixing for the future.

So I have a dilemma.

So far, the choice is to sell the car as a whole, strip it for parts (it's got some nice aftermarket bits fitted), or take it off the road and consider taking the time and effort to restore it properly (without a garage or a car lift, this is likely to mean professional help and a fair bit of expense).

I've been trying to decide for a while, in between sulking that the MOT was due just before the weather started getting better and I could at least have enjoyed a bit of summer cruising with the roof down...

Rest assured I'll have a decision shortly - after all, selling it or taking it off the road means I need to reclaim some of the car tax and cancel the insurance, so the longer I wait, the less I save.

In the meantime, if you're interested in snapping up what would be a great NX for someone with access to welding equipment, or a really cost effective donor car for parts including seats, alloys, lowered suspension, plus original roof cards and roof panel bags, give me a shout... (thewayoftheweb at googlemail dot com)Dan Thorntonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07967171952551962859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4974029847789922330.post-53381191166089284012009-03-12T05:18:00.001-07:002010-06-27T15:15:52.361-07:00Strange MOT test coincidenceI hadn't noticed until now, but in a completely odd coincidence, it appears the two cars in the family, built 11 years apart by different manufacturers, and owned by different family members, have one striking thing in common.

The MOT is due on the same day!

So I'm already preparing justification for keeping the NX on the road, as it will inevitably cost more than the other, more modern car. I also forgot it was coming up, so committed the cardinal sins of not doing basic checks for possible faults, and not giving it a good clean etc to at least give a good impression.

Mainly I forgot because the eletrical problems I had turned out to not be the battery (So I now have a spare battery), but an electrical fault somewhere. Taking out the alternator to test it, and then replacing it, seems to have magically cured it for the moment, but I'm just waiting for it to reappear at the worst possible moment.Dan Thorntonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07967171952551962859noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4974029847789922330.post-87102112567995424672009-02-13T07:05:00.001-08:002010-06-27T15:15:52.388-07:00The cost of tax for the Nissan NX100 1.6In addition to finding out the previous electrical problem was only temporarily cured by a new battery, there's a lovely letter from the DVLA asking me to renew the tax for the Nissan.

So if it's helpful, the cost for 6 months is £101.75, and the cost for 12 months is £185.00.

It's obviously cheaper to go for 12 months, if you know the car will last that long! Luckily reinforcements have arrived to help me work on the car, so hopefully I'll be able to go for the longterm option in the knowledge I might actually get the NX off the driveway at some point.Dan Thorntonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07967171952551962859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4974029847789922330.post-11888399422026137132009-01-27T04:56:00.001-08:002010-06-27T15:15:52.419-07:00Replacing a flat battery on the Nissan 100NXIt seems like only yesterday that I was getting the alternator repaired on the Nissan, but last week when I turned the ignition key, nothing happened.
I assumed the alternator might have packed up again, but due to the winter evenings and an early start for work I charged and replaced the battery the night before I intended to use the car.
And when I sat in the NX the next morning, only the clock was faintly working.

So I had to assume the battery had died. Great timing! Luckily the Halfords website actually lists the Nissan 100NX in the list of batteries it carries, so I've picked up and fitted a Halfords Calcium Battery HCB005. I did turn down their kind offer to fit it for £4.99, thinking that even I can wield a 10mm spanner - and it'd cost me more to get the car there!

For the record, the steps are pretty easy to replace a battery - it's a five minute job.

Using a 10mm spanner, loosen the negative terminal first, remove the retaining metal bar, and remove the positive terminal last.

Take the battery out, put new one in.

Attach the positive terminal first, and the negative terminal last.

Job done.

(Disposing of a car battery means a trip to your local tip - although a sign in Halfords did say they also dispose of them. Best to be careful, bearing in mind they contain acid.)Dan Thorntonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07967171952551962859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4974029847789922330.post-91708651050926662722008-12-13T06:56:00.001-08:002010-06-27T15:15:52.454-07:00What do you want to know about the Nissan NX?Well, I'm back in full-on enthusiastic mode after the local auto-electrician (Grimwoods in Peterborough), managed to fix my alternator for £30 - and despite the fact it was likely to take a few days, it was ready to pick up in one!

So there's going to be a fair bit of work to be done on the NX, despite the absolutely horrible weather in the UK at the moment - but I don't just want to write about how I washed the car and discovered a slight leak in the door rubber if it's not helping anyone.

So what would you most like to read, see, hear etc about the NX? More details on the car and how it was developed? More specific guides to general tasks? Specific tasks? Bodykits? Tuning?

If I can't help, I'm sure members of the NX forum will be able to help (link on the right)Dan Thorntonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07967171952551962859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4974029847789922330.post-21229769976580921742008-11-28T15:50:00.001-08:002010-06-27T15:15:52.486-07:00Don't rush to buy or replace a faulty alternatorWell, having traced my electrical problem to the alternator after charging the battery and managing to run it until flat, I started pricing up a replacement.

Turns out a standard Nissan alternator for the Nissan NX 1.6 carb engine is £190. Not good.
Local garage offered to get one and fit it for about the same.
Local autofactor cost about the same, but then added a surcharge to put it over £200 and more than a new original part!
And an auto-electrician said he'd have a look and suggested he might be able to find a replacement for £60.

In the end I thought the difference was worth taking a chance and went with the auto-electrician. And although he said it would take a while, he phoned me back with a couple of hours, for a cost of £30!

So once I've fitted it, I may have saved myself £160! It's always worth staying calm and thinking about your options, particularly if a part may just be repairable and it won't compromise your safety.Dan Thorntonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07967171952551962859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4974029847789922330.post-5743582688620040152008-11-23T07:44:00.001-08:002010-06-27T15:15:52.511-07:00One lesson I've learnt about Nissan in car entertainmentIt's probably obvious to anyone more sensible than me, but it was only the combination of an electrical fault and the Haynes manual that made me realise something rather important.

I've bought a 15-year-old car secondhand. The manual is long gone, and more importantly, so is the security code for the original radio. And that's the security code you need if you disconnect the battery for any reason.

Crap.Dan Thorntonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07967171952551962859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4974029847789922330.post-85614057165854981642008-11-13T17:31:00.001-08:002010-06-27T15:15:52.556-07:00We're losing all our power...I knew it was a bad idea to book a holiday and leave my beloved NX alone for a week.

But I thought it would be because I'd have cleaning and other work to do when I got back - not that it was spiteful enough to break down on me two days before I went away!

The symptoms suggest the alternator, as the dashboard lights started to dim on my penultimate commute home before the vacation. I was fooled for a moment when I had to park and grab some shopping, as I thought it might not start again, but everything seemed fine after it fired up first time.

And then I got to within 2 minutes of my house, and it started lurching, everything went dim, and with a whimper it cut out. Cue 15 minutes of pushing the car in the evening rain onto my driveway - at least I know the NX is surprisingly light.

Annoyingly the English winter means I have to wait till this weekend to get under the bonnet to trace the fault, but at least it gives me an excuse to get some work done. I just hope it isn't raining, and I don't need to jack the car up. Mainly because I've got a sloping driveway - and trying to jack up a lowered NX is a bit of a challenge at the best of times!Dan Thorntonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07967171952551962859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4974029847789922330.post-8288243030647700862008-10-21T05:51:00.002-07:002010-06-27T15:15:52.588-07:00The best car in a movie?Even though it doesn't feature a single Nissan 100 NX..(harumph), I'm still enjoying seeing what happens with Car Magazine's vote for 'The Greatest Car in Film History'.

The good thing is that it's open to other suggestions - so the lack of titles like American Grafitti and Taxi, and the lack of cars like the stars of The Fast and the Furious, and Initial D can be rectified...

I'm tempted to try and get everyone to vote for the Toyota AE86 Trueno...it might not be a Nissan, but at least it's a cool Japanese car...:)Dan Thorntonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07967171952551962859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4974029847789922330.post-42615816776365936972008-10-12T14:29:00.001-07:002010-06-27T15:15:52.617-07:00My unloved NX...I've been quite rubbish, and not really done anything with the NX - in fact I'm finding it hard to find time to even wash it at the moment!

But I've had some encouragement - in the last few days I've seen not one, but two Nissan NXs driving around the local area. Both look standard, but both also looked far cleaner and more loved than mine at the moment - a definite incentive to get the sponges and car shampoo out!

It seemed weird to see such as unusual car twice in one week - but the benefit of owning a car like mine is that you tend to spot any other owners instantly - which you wouldn't in a more normal car!

Hopefully I'll get out and give the NX some cleaning this week - I'm using Autoglym car products at the moment, so I'll let you know how they perform...Dan Thorntonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07967171952551962859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4974029847789922330.post-25753856160328477912008-09-27T07:33:00.001-07:002010-06-27T15:15:52.645-07:00Upgrading the brakes on a Nissan 100 NXI've finally started to make a bit of a difference to the performance and reliability of my Nissan NX, but loaning it to my girlfriend indicated I might need to change priorities.
Being used to a more modern car, she came back complaining about the lack of braking, and insinuating that my performance car is some kind of 'deathtrap'.

Having had a look on the expert 100NX Club forum, it appears that larger front discs may be a good answer, as well as replacing and maintaining the standard set-up. The larger AV22F calipers from a Nissan Sunny GTI/GTIR, Almera GTI and Primera SRi should do the job.

I'm just compiling the parts, and I'll let you know how I get on. Setp-by-step instructions are on the club forum, but you need to be a registered member. Get a pair for £50 plus £7.50 postage and packing (presumably just in the UK). Plus a £20 surcharge that you'll get returned if you send your old struts (so they have more to refurbish and keep the supply going).Dan Thorntonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07967171952551962859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4974029847789922330.post-34291424448506509712008-09-07T14:18:00.001-07:002010-06-27T15:15:52.699-07:00Put the spark back with a Distribution Cap for £6I'm slowly starting to make some changes to the car, and narrow down the causes of it stuttering at about 3-4,000rpm.

Although one of the likely causes is the carb, it makes sense to check and overhaul some of the other possibly reasons. And with new HT leads, and the spark plugs checked, next on the list was the distributor.

It looks as if the original Nissan distributor was still in place 15 years later, and it was definitely starting to show it's age! And being a weekend, the nearby Nissan dealership parts department was obviously shut by the time we'd got to the stage of needing a replacement.

So it was off to the local 'motor factors', and stockists of an almost infinite supply of anything and everything. I was expecting quite a large bill, but after comparing catalogues and specifications on a range of distributor caps, and putting them next to the original (Top Tip: Remember to take original parts with you if possible - makes it a lot easier to find a similar alternative!), we settled on what we thought was the right part.

It cost a whopping £6!

And since fitting it, the problem hasn't vanished completely, but it's a lot, lot better. The car starts more easily, picks up from low revs in a much better manner, and has only stuttered in really cold and damp weather.

And that's for a total cost of £6. In fact, the car really doesn't owe me that much in spares so far. I should really have kept a closer record, but it roughly stands at a jubilee clip (And an RAC call out), a distributor cap, four exhaust mounts and fitting (£24), a Haynes manual, and lots of cleaning products!

So £30 for spares and labour, about £14 for the manual, and some shampoo. Not too shabby!

If you've got a 1.6 carb Nissan 100 NX, the most 'cost effective' distributor cap, and the one that I have, comes from Commercial Ignition, Catalogue Number XD243.Dan Thorntonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07967171952551962859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4974029847789922330.post-22212300665755756032008-08-31T13:09:00.001-07:002010-06-27T15:15:52.743-07:00Nissan 100 NX 1.6 litre specifications, top speed and 0-60 timeI'm slowly collecting all the stats I can find for the Nissan 100 NX, NX Coupe, 1600 and 2000 NXs, starting with the manual geared 1.6:

Length 4140 mm
Width 1676 mm
Engine Size 1597 cc
0-60 mph 10.8 s
Power Output 102 bhp
Top Speed 121 mph
MPG 40
Insurance Group 11

12 months UK road tax is currently £185.
6 months UK road tax is £101.75.Dan Thorntonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07967171952551962859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4974029847789922330.post-4929479405635339092008-08-26T15:07:00.001-07:002010-06-27T15:15:52.769-07:00Spotted another NX on the road today...Turns out that maybe I'm not as unusual as I thought in owning a Nissan 100 NX.

First I saw a red one in nice condition on the way to work this morning, and then I found out someone from the 100NX Club Forum is in the same town (With a far more modded car than mine!).

Nice to see some others avoiding the perils of rust...Dan Thorntonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07967171952551962859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4974029847789922330.post-8128157859773720302008-08-23T14:12:00.002-07:002010-06-27T15:15:52.797-07:00The evolution of my NX continuesI've been incredibly busy recently, but it's given me time to come up with a realistic plan for the NX.

I'm never going to have a show-winning concours conditions car all the time I use it as a daily driver, and don't have access to a garage.

I can, however, have a car which is fairly quick and reliable, increasingly unusual, and shaped to my tastes.

So I'm planning some changes shortly. The first plan is to see if I can cure the problems with the NX running rough under acceleration by sorting the stock Nissin carb. If that fails, then it's time for a Weber.

Then after that, it's about tackling any rust, and also starting to unleash the free power of any car, by getting it as light as possible...

Just have to hope it stops raining for a couple of days....Dan Thorntonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07967171952551962859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4974029847789922330.post-74111939270583438982008-08-12T14:11:00.001-07:002010-06-27T15:15:52.828-07:00Some Nissan NX goodies, including t-shirtsI've been playing around with a website called Squidoo, which allows you to create simple pages around your favourite topics.

So of course, I chose the mighty NX. And in the process discovered some cool Nissan t-shirts etc. See them all for yourself, here.Dan Thorntonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07967171952551962859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4974029847789922330.post-1512354308443584672008-08-11T13:56:00.001-07:002010-06-27T15:15:52.855-07:00Nissan 100NX problems...Well, it hasn't all been smooth running - hence the delay in posting.

First problem was during a day out. Went to town for the day, and just as I pulled into a filtering lane for the multi-storey car park, I noticed steam coming from the bonnet. And of course, there was no way to get out of the line of cars...
By the time I made it inside and found somewhere to stop, there was a bang as the lower radiator hose shot off and sprayed coolant across the floor of the car park.

My RAC membership came in handy, as I didn't fancy trying to find gallons of water and a jubilee clip on a Saturday afternoon. Next day we filled the radiator back up with coolant and it's been fine since.

As opposed to the loud thumping noise from underneath the car. Withing the space of the day it had started tapping, turned into a thud, and ended up undriveable. A trip to the local garage diagnosed the problem as an exhaust mount, which was sorted for free - and the NX was booked back in for all of them to be replaced - which has now been done...

In the meantime I'm working on a shopping list...

Boot light cover.
Passenger side door handle shield.
Handbrake gaiter
Front left headlight
Front left foglight surround.

For starters!Dan Thorntonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07967171952551962859noreply@blogger.com0
